Live By The Rule of Three (Otherwise Known As Focus)

by | Jul 11, 2022

“Get clear on the right three focus areas in your business, the right three strategies or projects to implement first in each focus area, and the right three next steps for each strategy or project.”

Even though I’ve been in business for over 20 years, I still remember the early days like they were yesterday.

And the thing I remember most is that feeling of utter and complete overwhelm. frown

There is so much to do as an entrepreneur.  We get to wear all the hats and keep all the balls in the air (OK…I’m mixing my metaphors!).

So if you are feeling overwhelmed, overworked, or just plain have too many things to do on your list, I want to share with you my biggest productivity hack.

Live By The Rule of Three (Otherwise Known As Focus).

Ahh…the power of focus.  There is even a book called The Power of Focus by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen that I highly recommend by the way.

As entrepreneurs, we are constantly bombarded by things that we get to “do” in our business. And we have no shortage of new ideas either, right?

But that doesn’t mean we have to implement them all! Or at least not all at one time.  😀

You see, our brain is designed to most easily handle three things, or choices, at a time.

It’s why you find that there are often three levels of support for a program, three choices of a main entrée, or three versions of a car model.

We are naturally comfortable with “three”.

The Rule of Three is also how you’ll learn to create focus on doing the right things in the right order.

When you create your Vision for your life and business (part of my Freedom Formula, and the starting point for any new entrepreneur), there are going to be 101 things needed to make it a reality.

But you can’t possibly keep them all in your head.

Instead, get clear on what the right three focus areas are in your business, what the right three strategies or projects are for you to implement first in each focus area, and what the right three next steps are for each strategy or project.

I call this my 3X3X3 Results Planner, and it can change your life!

By the way, message me and tell me you want my Results Planner template and I’ll send it right out!

When you live by the Rule of Three, you’ll no longer swirl in the question “What should I do next?”

Using the Results Planner, you’ll always know exactly what you get to do to move your business towards your vision!

The Rule of Three also applies to pretty much every important area of your life and business.

You get to have one core offer, delivered in three ways, so you don’t have to develop ten, or even three, different marketing plans for different products or services you offer.

You get to choose three core marketing strategies to drive your business and say “no” to everything else.

And, if you want to lose 10 pounds, you get to have 3 daily actions that will keep you on track.

Can you see how this can allow you to focus more and do less?

There is such power in just saying “no”!

If you do nothing else in your business right now but live by the Rule of Three, you’ll at least triple your chances of success, and you won’t kill yourself in the process.

As an example, if you are pretty new in your business, these are the top three focus areas I’d recommend (assuming you are already clear on your vision, your ideal client, and your messaging/offers):

Make your first priority perfecting one way that you’ll find clients (your marketing).

If you are launching a one-on-one coaching business, focus on perfecting getting speaking gigs, or driving leads via social media, or using LinkedIn to meet potential clients.

But don’t try to do all three all at once if they are all new to you.

Make your second priority developing the content you need to implement the strategy to find clients.

Content will always be useful in your business.  Focus on what you need to implement your strategy and you’ll have content to repurpose going forward.

Make your third priority automating the strategy as much as possible. What do you need to put in place to take work off your plate?

Implement a scheduling tool, put automated email sequences in place, or hire a VA to help with administrative tasks.

Then, as you complete a project, you get to add another!

But don’t move to a new focus until you’ve fully implemented one and it’s working pretty much on auto-pilot.

With this level of focus, you will create the foundation for long-term success in your business.

And perhaps more important, you’ll be able to work less and make a bigger difference with your clients.

And isn’t that what you want? To live the lifestyle you dream of NOW, and be able to share the gift you are here to share?

I know you are saying “YES!”. 😀

So, right now, declare one area where you are feeling overwhelmed and choose your first three priorities for focus.

Then hold yourself accountable by commenting below what you’ll focus on to anchor your commitment.
